Cross an island by coordinates, then sort shapes through property gates into their family tree.
REMEMBER: An ordered pair (x, y) is an address: the first number says how far
right along the x-axis, the second how far up along the y-axis, starting at the
origin (0, 0). (3, 5) and (5, 3) are different places. Shapes are sorted by
properties — number of sides, parallel sides, equal sides, right angles — into a
family tree. Whatever is true of a category is inherited by every subcategory:
every square is a rectangle, so everything true of rectangles is true of squares.
Part 1 Β· Coordinate Quest
The island map is a first-quadrant grid. Each quest names a landmark and its coordinates. Enter the
ordered pair and travel. Mix up the order and you may land in the swamp.
Story Graph: the bean plant
A graph of a bean plant’s height each week. Pick a week and read the point in context.
The Shape Family Tree
Pick a shape, then send it through the property gates. Answer each gate yourself —
the marks on the shape are your evidence. Watch the shape settle into its place in the tree.
Part 2 Β· Impostor Rounds & Square on Trial
A shape claims membership in a club. Accept or reject it — with a property reason.
Lock in, then see the verdict. A few rounds test coordinates and inheritance instead.
Part 3 Β· The Machines
Three step-by-step machines. Each step says what to do and why.
Plot a point and read it in context
Classify a shape by its properties
What does a subcategory inherit?
Part 4 Β· Island Cartographer Quiz
Ten questions. Each wrong answer tells you which part to revisit.
Question 1 of 10Score: 0
Word Box
Coordinate plane Β· Axes Β· Origin
Two perpendicular number lines (the x-axis and y-axis) crossing at the origin (0, 0).
Ordered pair (x, y)
An address on the plane. x = distance right; y = distance up. Order matters.
First quadrant
The part of the plane where both coordinates are 0 or positive.
Parallel sides
Sides that run in the same direction and never meet. Marked with matching arrows.
Right angle
A square corner (90°). Marked with a small square.
Quadrilateral
Any closed shape with four straight sides.
Parallelogram Β· Rectangle Β· Rhombus Β· Square
Parallelogram: two pairs of parallel sides. Rectangle: parallelogram with four right angles. Rhombus: parallelogram with four equal sides. Square: both.
Trapezoid Β· Kite
Trapezoid: exactly one pair of parallel sides (some books say “at least one”). Kite: two pairs of equal sides that are next to each other, no parallel sides.
Hierarchy Β· Inherit
A family tree of categories. A subcategory inherits every property of the category above it.
