Fill boxes with unit cubes, discover the layer shortcut, convert units, and read a class line plot.
REMEMBER:Volume is a count of unit cubes that pack a solid with no gaps or
overlaps. Fill one layer and count it — that is the base, B = l × w. Stack
h layers and the count is B × h = l × w × h. An L-shaped solid
is two boxes: find each volume and add. To convert units, multiply when going
to a smaller unit (more of them) and divide when going to a larger unit (fewer). A line plot stacks an X for every
measurement; read it with the fraction skills you already have.
Part 1 · Fill the Box
Set the box size. Add cubes one at a time, or fill a whole layer at once.
Watch the running count — the shortcut shows itself.

The L-Shaped Aquarium
This tank is two boxes glued together. Find each box, then add.
The tower sits on one end of the big box, so its length must be no more than the big box’s length and its width must match.
The Measurement Station
Everyone measured a pencil to the nearest ⅛ inch. Add your own, then read the plot.
Part 2 · Box Challenges
Predict before you build. Lock in your answer, then see the reveal. Some challenges are about boxes, some
about pouring between units, some about the line plot.
Part 3 · The Machines
Three step-by-step machines. Each step says what to do and why.
Volume of a box (and a second box to add)
Convert within a measurement system
Build a line plot and answer with fractions
Use halves, fourths, or eighths, like 1/2, 3/4, 1 1/8.
Part 4 · Box Engineer Quiz
Ten questions. Each wrong answer tells you which station to revisit.
Question 1 of 10Score: 0
Word Box
Volume
The amount of space a solid takes up, measured by how many unit cubes pack it with no gaps or overlaps.
Unit cube · Cubic unit
A cube with edges of 1 unit has a volume of 1 cubic unit (1 cm³, 1 in³, 1 ft³).
Layer
One flat level of cubes. Its count is the base B = length × width.
Base (B)
The number of cubes in one layer. Volume = B × height.
Right rectangular prism
A box shape: six rectangular faces meeting at right angles.
Composite solid
A shape made of two or more boxes. Its volume is the sum of the parts.
Convert
Change a measurement to a different unit without changing the amount: 5 cm = 0.05 m.
Line plot
A number line with an X (or dot) stacked above each measurement.
