Run a farmers-market stall. Bulk orders, crate splitting, and a cash register โ€” every written method stays tied to a picture.

REMEMBER: Estimate first. A ballpark answer catches a misplaced decimal point before it costs you a $2,000 apple. The standard algorithm for multiplication is the area model written in a column โ€” every row is a piece of the rectangle. Division is fair sharing in chunks: take out big groups first, then smaller ones, and add up what you took. Decimals follow the same place-value rules as whole numbers โ€” line up places to add or subtract, and use your estimate to place the point when you multiply or divide.

Part 1 ยท The Bulk Order

A restaurant orders crates of produce. Enter the crate count and the price-per-crate (whole dollars) and build the bill one partial product at a time. The area model on the left and the standard algorithm on the right light up the same piece together.

Crate Splitting

A truck drops off a pile of items to pack into crates. Share them out in big batches first. Each batch you take out is a strip of the rectangle โ€” the crate count grows as the pile shrinks.

        Factor ยท Product
        The numbers you multiply, and the answer. 37 × 246: the factors are 37 and 246; the product is 9,102.
        Partial product
        One piece of a multiplication โ€” a single region of the area model, or a single row of the standard algorithm.
        Area model
        A rectangle split by place value. Its total area is the product; each region is a partial product.
        Standard algorithm
        The column method for multiplying. Each row multiplies by one digit of the second factor; the rows are the area model added up.
        Dividend ยท Divisor ยท Quotient ยท Remainder
        1368 ÷ 24 = 57: the dividend is 1368, the divisor 24, the quotient 57. Whatever is left that is too small to share is the remainder.
        Partial quotient
        A chunk of the quotient taken out in one step โ€” a strip of the division rectangle.
        Estimate
        A ballpark answer made with friendly numbers. Used before an exact answer to catch mistakes โ€” especially a misplaced decimal point.
        Hundredth
        One of 100 equal parts of a whole. A cent is a hundredth of a dollar, which is why money is the best decimal model there is.
