A vertical column on the periodic table; elements in it share similar properties.
Alkali metals
Group 1 (not hydrogen); one valence electron and extremely reactive.
Alkaline earth metals
Group 2; two valence electrons and quite reactive, though less than group 1.
Transition metals
Groups 3–12; hard, shiny metals with varied valence and lower reactivity.
Halogens
Group 17; seven valence electrons and very reactive nonmetals.
Noble gases
Group 18; full valence shells make them inert (unreactive).
