Smallest division
The tiniest marked spacing on the ruler; on a mm ruler it is 1 millimeter.
Estimated digit
The one extra digit you guess between the smallest marks — always included in a good measurement.
Certain digits
The digits you can read directly from the marks, before the estimated one.
Significant figures
All the digits that carry real information, including the one estimated digit.
Precision
How finely a tool can measure; a mm ruler is more precise than a cm-only ruler.
Zero point
The mark you line the object's left edge up with; if it isn't 0, you must subtract.
Millimeter (mm)
One tenth of a centimeter; 10 mm = 1 cm.
